Matt King ran in a hat-trick as Warrington all but ended Wakefield's Super League play-off hopes.
Tries from Chris Hicks and a King double gave the Wolves the lead before Damien Blanch replied for the hosts.
Chris Riley and Ben Jeffries traded tries before the break but King's third and further scores from Matty Blythe and Lee Briers ended the contest.
Wakefield lie four points adrift of eighth-placed Crusaders with two games left, while Warrington go second again.
The Wolves have gone back in front of third-placed St Helens.
But, in the private battle for second place, which would ensure home advantage when the play-offs start on 11 September, Saints' 60-12 thumping of Bradford on Friday night has vastly reduced the points difference - and there is now just two points between them.
The Wildcats' fourth successive defeat was doubly disappointing for Jason Demetriou and Tevita Leo-Latu, who are both leaving the club at the end of the season and were making their last appearances at Belle Vue.
Wakefield were chasing the game from the moment Hicks touched down Briers' high kick and went further behind when an Adrian Morley-inspired attack resulted in Riley sending King clear down the left.
A landslide seemed to be looming when Ryan Atkins ushered King in for his second.
But Blanch got Wakefield on the board with his 12th try of the season.
And, after Riley went over from close range for his 23rd try of the campaign, Jeffries' pace kept him away from a clutch of Warrington defenders to ensure the home side went to half-time only 10 points behind.
But Warrington crossed again within a minute of the restart through the pace of Blythe. And, seven minutes later, King's brute strength carried him to his hat-trick and the Wolves to what proved to be an unassailable position.
Glenn Morrison pulled a score back for the hosts only for Briers to intercept Sam Obst's wayward pass and sprint clear.
Although Wakefield had long since surrendered the points, there was still time for Salford-bound Leo-Latu to collect Jeffries' pass and bid farewell to Belle Vue with a try of his own.
Wakefield boss John Kear: "It was scratchy and not the highest quality game but there were signs of improvement for us and signs that things we have worked on were appearing.
"So we do feel that we have taken step forward and it's important that we continue to support the players in their quest to regain their confidence and their self-belief."
Warrington assistant coach James Lowes: "It was important for us to win after Saints won on Friday and we did it in second gear to be fair.
"We stepped up when we needed to and came through with no injuries, but we have performed a lot better over recent weeks.
"We were OK across the board and did enough to get two points. It was a professional job but there is certainly a lot more in the tank."
