Chris Riley
Riley has already scored more Super League tries this term than in 2009

Chris Riley grabbed his second hat-trick of the season as Warrington saw off Wakefield to keep the pressure on Super League leaders Wigan.

Loan signing Michael Korkidas scored his first try for Wakefield, one of three efforts from the game visitors.

But Ryan Atkins bagged a brace for the Wolves, whose other try came from loose forward Chris Bridge.

Bridge also landed four goals as Warrington bounced back in style from last weekend's defeat by St Helens.

Aaron Murphy and Sam Obst scored Wakefield's other tries, while new boy Paul Cooke kicked two goals on his first start - at stand-off.

Riley's treble took his tally to 10 tries for the season, putting him level with Wigan duo Amos Roberts and Pat Richards as the top try scorers so far in Super League XV.

And that is already one more than Riley managed in 25 Super League appearances in 2009.

Warrington got the ideal start when Riley, who bagged five tries in one game when the Wolves opened the season with a 58-0 win over Harlequins, scooted over in the left corner inside three minutes.

Bridge could not add the touchline conversion but made up for his miss when he seized on severe indecision in the Wakefield defence to run in next to the posts from his chip ahead.

The visitors hit back when Murphy went over in the corner but superior Warrington extended their lead when Bridge astutely spotted an overlap on the left before Atkins injected a devastating burst of pace, allowing Riley to finish in the left corner.

Substitute Korkidas barged over for Wakefield minutes before the break to briefly get them back into it, Cooke adding a simple kick to leave them only six points behind.

But, with seconds left in the half, Atkins got a hand to Simon Grix's grubber kick and Bridge converted to leave the hosts with a healthy lead.

Riley completed his hat-trick minutes after the break after an offload from David Solomona before Atkins crossed in the corner five minutes later.

But Warrington could not add another point in the final half hour, Atkins going closest when he had the home crowd jumping and screaming in racing almost the full length of the pitch in a remarkable run to the line.

But the referee brought them all the way back and, to the outrage of the crowd, Obst waltzed over for what proved the final try of the night.

Warrington coach Tony Smith:

"With learning when to push that last pass and when not to, we are still getting a bit excited at times.

"With a little bit more composure we would have probably scored more points and conceded less points but getting the right balance is still early doors and we're still learning.

"For periods we really dominated and then we just let our grip go for periods and got into a tussle."

Wakefield coach John Kear said:

"They were very good. They have become most un-Warrington-like. They give very little away.

"Tony Smith has done a great job here. He has really changed the culture here off the field and that is reflected on the field.

"They work really hard for each other and they presented a massive challenge tonight and the better team won.

"It is a very good Warrington team indeed. They're going to be there or thereabouts at the end of the season."
