Sam Obst provided the inspiration to kickstart Wakefield's fightback |
Wakefield Trinity Wildcats produced a devastating second-half fightback to end Hull KR's unbeaten home record. Rovers dominated the opening half with tries from Liam Colbon, Jake Webster and Scott Murrell. But, after Danny Brough was sin-binned on half-time, 12-man Wakefield produced some inspirational rugby. Sam Obst built on Shane Tronc's first-half try, then set up Matt Blaymire and Daryl Millard latched onto Brough's kick before Tronc added a second. It was a stunning response by Wakefield, who remain hopeful of signing Hull KR stand-off Paul Cooke, to last weekend's embarrassing 52-0 home hammering by Huddersfield. Prior to that, Wakefield had made a great start to the season, winning their first three matches. But things had not gone well since, drug-shamed Terry Newton's departure having been followed by their first defeat, at St Helens, then Saturday's 10-try mauling. | 606: DEBATE |
And it looked like worse was to follow when Colbon opened the scoring with only three minutes gone. Prop Tronc replied on nine minutes with the first Wildcats try came as he muscled his way over after receiving a perfectly-timed Brough pass. But, as the pace of the game intensified, centre Webster finished off a perfectly executed Hull KR move as dummy runners bamboozled the visitors defence and created the overlap for the New Zealander. Three minutes later, Murrell's chip ahead was charged down but the ricochet fell into the hands of Webster, who broke the line and fed back inside for stand-off Murrell to canter over. When Brough was sin-binned on the stroke of half time for a professional foul, Dobson slotted the resulting penalty to earn Justin Morgan's men a 12-point interval lead. But the Wildcats emerged for the second half in inspirational mood. | In the Olympics, you have to wait four years to put something right. Colbon's knock-on allowed the chance for stand-off Obst to weave his way through six would-be tacklers to crash over before adding the extras himself. And Obst was again instrumental when his kick bounced in goal but, as full-back Shaun Briscoe hesitated, opposite number Blaymire nipped in behind him to ground the ball for Wakefield's third try. Wildcats maintained their fightback to take the lead for the first time when Millard launched himself onto Brough's inch-perfect kick. Wakefield then gave themselves a seven-point cushion when Blaymire coolly stroked home a drop-goal. And Tronc crashed over from a short pass for a carbon copy of his first-half score to seal victory.
Hull KR coach Justin Morgan: "It's very difficult to take. The last couple of weeks have shown we can play for 80 minutes but here we switched off. "In the second half we didn't do anything that we intended. Our discipline was poor and untimely errors cost us. Across the board a lot of people weren't near their best and everyone should hang their heads. "It is very bitter to swallow. But the beauty of our game is that we can get back on the horse. "In the Olympics, you have to wait four years to put something right. We can try and do it next week." Wakefield Trinity Wildcats coach John Kear: "We were edgy and nervy in the first half, as you would be after a 52-0 hiding. But the whole second half was a great response. "We spoke at half-time about how we had to get through that period, with Danny Brough on the sidelines, and we carried it out to the letter. "I was delighted with the way Sam Obst stood up and took responsibility. Sam took control of the game and that was the turning period."
