Warrington halted Wigan's recent Super League revival with a narrow win at the Halliwell Jones stadium on Sunday.
Ten points from the boot of Lee Briers proved crucial as the Wolves, who led 10-2 at the break, held on for victory.
The rejuvenated Warriors went into the match on the back of five successive wins but fell behind to tries from Martin Gleeson and Toa Kohe-Love.
The visitors hit back to level twice at 14-14 and 20-20, but a Briers penalty on 78 minutes settled the outcome.
Paul Wood also crossed for Warrington while Danny Tickle, Sean O'Loughlin and Chris Ashton touched down for Wigan.
Warrington coach Paul Cullen
"You have to stand back and admire the efforts of two sets of 17 who have run their blood to water. "I'm delighted with our defence and even more delighted with our mental toughness in an exceptionally hot, fast game, played in a great spirit.
"We pushed Wigan to the limit, matched them blow for blow, played some good rugby and came away with the points."
Wigan coach Brian Noble
"In the first 20 minutes we went back to the bad old days, but I thought the tide had turned at half-time. "We were a lot tougher in the second half and I certainly thought we deserved something out of the game.
"I was encouraged by a lot of things and collectively I thought the effort was great."
