Tries:Clayton, Moule
Goals: Myler (2)
Wigan shook off a determined Salford side to make it five wins on the spin and move out of the bottom two.
Brian Fletcher touched down Danny Orr's kick-through to open the scoring, before Brett Dallas made it two when Junior Langi slipped at the vital time.
Ryan Clayton pulled one back for the Reds before an Aaron Moule try and a Steven Myler goal drew them level.
Michael Dobson's fourth kick restored Wigan's lead before Orr scored under the posts to finally secure the win.
Wigan coach Brian Noble: "We had a chance to put them away in the first half but we bombed two or three chances and gave Salford a way back in.
"As always, we need to improve next week. Probably our defence won it.
"We need to look at what we do with the ball at the other end but Salford are a tough team to break down."
Salford coach Karl Harrison: "It was a real good game. Wigan are scrapping for their lives and I thought we played pretty well.
"The guys should be proud of their performance. I thought Luke Robinson was outstanding. At times he took on Wigan by himself.
"With a little bit more luck, we could have won, but credit to Wigan. You can see the changes Brian Noble has made."
