Catalans (0) 6 Try: Rudder Goal: Dobson |
Defending champions Bradford put the Catalans Dragons to the sword, running in 10 tries to give new coach Steve McNamara his first win in charge. Stanley Gene notched a hat-trick as the Dragons struggled badly at Odsal.
Marcus Bai set the tone with a try in the first minute, with Ben Harris and Shontayne Hape also among the try-scorers for a 26-0 half-time lead.
The Dragons' defence disintegrated after the break, but Sean Rudder did at least get them on the scoreboard.
Bradford's power has been too much for better teams than the Dragons in the past, and the pre-match predictions of a one-sided contest proved accurate.
Bai took a borderline pass from Michael Withers to cross unopposed at the corner, and it was downhill from then on for the Catalans.
Hape took advantage of a mistake under the high ball by Dragons winger Justin Murphy, and Ben Harris repeated the trick on 23 minutes.
Gene took the match out of the Dragons' reach, bursting through the despairing tacklers to score on 31 minutes and he swiftly followed it up with a 30m dart to the line after a pass from Hape.
After the break, Bradford when Withers' superb break opened up the defence and Ben Harris was able to go over for their sixth try.
The next try was more than a little unfair on the Dragons, although it made no difference to the overall outcome of the match.
Lesley Vainikolo seemed to have knocked on and then put his feet in touch twice before Brett Ferres went over for a 36-0 scoreline.
Andy Lynch was the next to benefit from some feeble defending, but the Dragons did save some blushes when Rudder ran a good line to power over for their only try.
Gene completed his hat-trick from close range nine minutes from time, and the prolific Vainikolo made sure he got in on the act with the final score.
Bradford Bulls head coach Steve McNamara on versatile Stanley Gene:
"Stanley's a handy guy to have around and he's very enthusiastic in every position he plays. "I think he's 32 but he's improving all the time. He complements all the other attributes in the team.
"It's nice to get my first win but I'm more pleased for the players that they have come through a difficult Easter period because this is usually the game that catches up with you."
Catalans coach Mick Potter:
"We probably took a bit of a hit with our confidence. "We have got little things to work on but they all add up.
"We made too many errors in the first half and didn't build any pressure. I'm a little disappointed the score blew out at the end."
