Steve McNamara's reign as Bradford boss started with a defeat as Warrington cut loose late in the game on Sunday.

The hosts led 10-4 at half-time after tries from Martin Gleeson and Ben Westwood, plus a goal from Lee Briers, with Marcus Bai crossing for Bradford.

There was no further score until after the hour mark.

Lee Briers edged the hosts further ahead with a drop goal before they ran in late tries from Paul Wood, Gleeson with his second and Briers.

Warrington managed to take control in a frantic opening 15 minutes that saw two players sin-binned, two tries scored and another disallowed.

Bradford hooker Terry Newton was the first player shown the yellow card after just two minutes when he was mistakenly penalised for a high shot on stand-off Briers by referee Ashley Klein.

Warrington then took the lead through Gleeson before going down to 12 men themselves as Mike Wainwright was sin-binned.

Westwood crossed for a try, with Briers adding the extras, before Bai went over for Wigan's only try to make it 10-4 at the break.

The hosts needed some ferocious defence to repel Bradford before Briers edged them further ahead with his third attempt at a drop goal.

It proved the breaking point as from the next possession the Wolves moved swiftly downfield and Jon Clarke put Wood over by the posts for the decisive try.

Gleeson then broke from 20 metres to score and put the game beyond doubt and Briers, who kicked three goals, wrapped matters up with the final try in the last minute.

  • Bulls coach Steve McNamara:
"I praised the players for the way they conducted themselves over the Easter programme with everything going around about (former coach) Brian Noble.

"They pushed it to one side and stayed focused. They stayed focused today but we just weren't good enough on the day.

"I think we lacked energy and if you lack energy you lack push. It was our third game in 10 days, although that was the same for both sides.

"I felt both sides looked tired, especially in that 25-minute spell in the second half when no-one scored."

  • Wolves boss Paul Cullen:
"It was an outstanding effort against a very good team in a decent run of form.

"They have world-class players and are a world-class club, so that was a world-class win.

"Guts, determination and scrambling defence were the order of the day. One to 17 were completely committed and we are disappointed we didn't 'nil' them."
