Wellens is an integral part of Saints' Super League hopes |
St Helens could be without Paul Wellens for six weeks after the Great Britain star suffered a facial injury during Friday's win over Bradford Bulls. The full-back fractured a cheekbone and sustained eye damage after diving on a loose ball near his own tryline, 24 minutes into Saints' 38-16 victory.
Club doctor Simon Perritt said: "It looks like it could be serious.
"Paul will go for X-rays on Monday and see the facial surgeon on Wednesday and we will know more then."
There were also injury concerns for Bradford, with captain Iestyn Harris and second row Paul Johnson withdrawn before half-time while scrum-half Paul Deacon picked up a facial injury before the end of the match.
There were fears that Harris had broken his arm but X-rays showed he only suffered bruising.
Bradford coach Brian Noble said Deacon's problem was not related to the serious facial injury sustained during the 2005 Tri-Nations series.
