Warrington scored two late tries to stun Wigan at the Halliwell Jones Stadium and go above the Warriors in the Super League table. Wigan had led 22-12 with 20 minutes to go after tries from Martin Aspinwall, Danny Tickle and Dennis Moran.
But Warrington hit back with a Logan Swann try before Danny Lima crossed for his second with just nine minutes left.
Nathan Wood then intercepted a Moran pass for the vital try and the Wolves hung on despite late Wigan pressure.
The Warriors thought they had claimed victory in the closing stages but referee Ashley Klein felt he did not ground the ball.
Warrington coach Paul Cullen was full of praise for his players after the win.
 | That was a very good Wigan side and we have taken them on blow for blow |
"It is one of those special days - full house, sun shining, team in good form and also going on to win," he said.
"The players celebrated at the end. That just shows the importance of the game - Wigan games are special.
"I came here in 1980 and have been part of many muggings from Wigan. But that was not a mugging this time.
"We out-played Wigan - we out-thought and out-fought them. You can't coach character but we had it in abundance.
"I don't fall for the Wigan are weaker and have injuries line. That was a very good Wigan side and we have taken them on blow for blow."
 | We conspired to our own downfall |
Wigan coach Denis Betts admitted his side have to be more ruthless if they are to turn around their season.
"There has been a theme throughout the season where we have been the better team for periods of a game but not been able to convert it into success," he said
"We played well in the first half and got a good try in the second half. We had the momentum but then it swung away from us, we conspired to our own downfall.
"Warrington got a sniff and they are a good side and stick in there. It is our inability to do that that is costing us."
