Huddersfield's Sean Penkywicz has been banned for two years by the Rugby Football League after testing positive for the banned substance stanozolol. The 23-year-old half-back failed a test for the anabolic steroid at a Giants training session on 17 December.
The ban was backdated to 11 March and the player was ordered to pay the costs of Wednesday's 90-minute hearing.
Warrington winger Phil Berry was also handed a two-year suspension after testing positive for nandrolone.
Penkywicz's punishment comes just six weeks after Ryan Hudson was banned for two years for taking the same steroid.
Penkywicz, who appeared in the Giants' opening four games of this season, has since been sacked by his club.
"He is shocked and devastated," said Richard Cramer, Penkywicz's Leeds-based solicitor.
"He is very disappointed that the tribunal didn't take into account the very powerful mitigation and we will take time to reflect. He may well appeal.
"Rugby has been his life since he was 16. It's the only thing he knows. He has a partner and a nine-month child and has just bought a house with a mortgage.
"The financial consequences are devastating because he has nothing to fall back on."
Leigh-born Penkywicz joined Halifax from Warrington five years ago and made 56 appearances for them until they were relegated from Super League in 2003, when he moved to Huddersfield.
He played in all 32 of the Giants' League and Cup matches last season and was in their starting line-up for the opening game of Super League X.
