Senior played a prominent part for Great Britain and Leeds |
Leeds Rhinos pair Keith Senior and Ryan Bailey have been fined 1,500 by the Rugby Football League after testing positive for the banned drug ephedrine. The Great Britain internationals, along with Steve Rutherford of Gateshead Thunder, were found guilty of breaching the sport's doping control regulations.
But all three had declared their use of the substance prior to testing.
And the RFL accepted that the ephedrine was taken for illness and not with the intention of enhancing performance.
Senior and Bailey were also made to pay 700 in costs, while Rutherford was ordered to make a contribution to the cost of the hearing.
The trio's failed tests bring the issue of drugs in rugby league back to the fore.
Last year, Halifax's Dane Dorahy was reprimanded after testing positive for the same steroid as disgraced sprinter Ben Johnson used at the 1998 Seoul Olympics.
And another Halifax player, Martin Moana, was banned for 28 days after testing positive for ephedrine.
But RFL executive chairman Richard Lewis believes the sport does not have a big drugs problem.
"These cases do not represent a widespread problem in rugby league," he said.
"But we do feel it is important to clarify issues relating to ephedrine so that all players and relevant personnel have the maximum amount of information."
Leeds chief executive Gary Hetherington said: "The RFL has dealt with this matter thoroughly and professionally, and there are clear lessons to be learned for all.
"Leeds have an excellent record of awareness of drugs and doping control issues and will support any new education and information initiatives which the RFL seeks to introduce."
