The Rhinos took 15 minutes before troubling the scoreboard with Rob Burrow's try, the first of four first-half touchdowns.

Nine more followed after the break as Leeds scored at will, often running in tries from long range.

Ian Millward must now lift his team for next week's Cup tie with St Helens.

Wigan's previous record loss was also away at Leeds, and when Millward visited Headingley with St Helens last July the Rhinos also won 70-0, but no-one could have predicted such a one-sided match.

The visitors were missing several senior players, and early on their problems grew when captain Terry Newton picked up a back injury.

Kevin Sinfield set up Burrow for the opener, four minutes before Chev Walker added a second.

When Andrew Dunemann made it three on 25 minutes, the signs were ominous.

Dennis Moran nearly pulled back a try, before Barrie McDermott finished off after good work by Gareth Ellis.

After the break, Mark Calderwood touched down, before Ali Lauitiiti set up tries for Danny McGuire and Keith Senior.

Walker and McDermott each bagged a second before additional tries by Calderwood, McGuire, Lauitiiti and Burrow left Wigan praying for the final whistle.

Afterwards, even Leeds boss Tony Smith admitted he was shocked by the margin of victory.

"We achieved just about all the goals we set ourselves before the game," said the Australian, after watching his side run in 70 points for the second successive week.

"To do that particularly in those conditions leaves me a bit gob-smacked.

"To nil a team in today's game is an amazing feat and to do it in that heat is something above amazing."

Millward said the result was entirely fair, and that it revealed the shortcomings of the team he had recently taken over.

"It was a fair indication of boys against men," he said.

"There were 11 changes from the team that played here in the eliminator last year and that showed.

"There has got to be some pain before gain. Long-term I'm confident but short-term we came up against a fantastic team.

"We were outmuscled and outskilled and the young kids found it a bit overwhelming at times."
