Wigan were made pay for failing to convert their opportunities as Hull held on for a narrow victory. Richie Barnett went over for two tries for Hull but Danny Brough and Paul Cooke also played crucial roles.
Although Dennis Moran scored twice for Wigan in the opening half, Brough's kicking game gave Hull a narrow lead at the interval.
Cooke and Wigan's Brian Carney were sin-binned for a second-half brawl but Hull managed to cling on for the win.
Hull coach John Kear said his side's victory was vital in strengthening the resolve in the team.
"It was a see-saw battle and it was very intense. What happened out there will help to build the soul of the side," said Kear.

"We came up against pieces of adversity and overcame them.
"We had to run with 15 players, because of all the injuries, and that's why I'm so pleased. Everyone who stepped out on the field for us was excellent."
Wigan coach Millward was disappointed his side failed to make the most of their chances.
"There is a lot of dejection and frustration in our dressing room," said the Australian.
"The players have got the field position, got the possession and we haven't been able to make that final pass. It's not easy to take.
"I thought a couple of decisions went against us. There was a fine line between victory and defeat for us."
