Widnes Vikings 24-18 Warrington Wolves

Widnes recorded a Super League double over local rivals Warrington with victory in a passionate derby encounter at the Halton Stadium.

The Vikings followed up their 20-14 victory over the Wolves at Wilderspool in April to grab the two league points which sees them leapfrog London Broncos back into sixth spot in the table.

The game was in the balance with the Vikings holding a 20-18 lead with seven minutes remaining.

But they made sure of victory when Steve Carter raced 60 metres and set up the position for Stuart Spruce to grab his second try of the game.

In a see-saw first half, which saw the lead change hands on five occasions, Warrington built up a 14-12 advantage at half-time.

French forward Jerome Guisset grabbed two tries for the visitors while winger Danny Halliwell also touched down with Lee Briers only able to land one conversion.

The Vikings' first-half points came through tries by Spruce and Gareth Haggerty with Barry Eaton landing two goals.

Widnes were on level terms just two minutes after the restart when Eaton kicked a 35-metre penalty and the Vikings then took the lead when Adam Hughes touched down Craig Weston's kick to make it 18-14.

But the Wolves drew level 12 minutes from time when a break by Darren Burns allowed Nathan Wood to sprint 40 minutes to touch down.

Briers was once again off target with the conversion on a disappointing day for the Warrington captain which saw him land just one goal from five attempts.

The Vikings edged back in front when Hughes kicked a 40-metre and then Spruce sealed the win with his late try.
