Deacon sinks Warriors
Wigan's Andy Farrell
Wigan's Farrell saw his side miss out at the death
Bradford 28-26 Wigan

Bradford's kicker Paul Deacon stroked a last-gasp penalty to hand the Bulls a thrilling comeback victory over Wigan.

Bradford's 21-game unbeaten home record was under threat when the Warriors raced to a 12-0 lead after 22 minutes and were 20-10 up at the interval.

But the Challenge Cup holders were in the process of compiling 20 unanswered points to haul themselves back against the champions.

Eventually the scores were locked on 26-26 as Wigan captain Andy Farrell missed a chance to edge his side back in front with seven minutes left.

But Bradford were awarded a penalty for crossing by Wigan in the fourth minute of injury time and Deakin landed the 55-metre kick on the hooter.

Bradford scored five tries through Michael Withers (2), Nathan McAvoy, Tevita Vaikona, and Scott Naylor, while Deacon kicked four goals.

For Wigan, skipper Andy Farrell stroked five goals as Adrian Lam, Brett Dallas, Terry Newton and Stephen Wild crossed for tries.

Wigan came out fired up but lost second row forward Simon Haughton early on when he sustained a head injury in pulling off a try-saving tackle on Bulls skipper Robbie Paul.

Substitute Sean O'Loughlin was introduced and he quickly made an impression, putting Wild through a gap 60 metres out for the opening try.

Wigan crossed again when scrum-half Lam fed centre Paul Johnson before taking a return pass to touch down for the Warriors' second try.

But the Bulls struck back on 25 minutes when full-back Withers dummied his way over for a try.

Deacon missed the conversion but soon landed a penalty to cut the deficit to 12-6.

Wigan scored a third try on 34 minutes when flying winger Dallas intercepted a wayward pass from Bulls captain Robbie Paul and raced 60 metres for his 14th touchdown of the season.

The Warriors advanced to 20-6 up courtesy of Farrell and looked in complete control.

But Bradford fought back before the break when left-winger McAvoy leapt high to catch Deacon's high kick and claim a second try.

Bradford took six minutes of the second half to make further inroads through wing Vaikona.

And soon after Naylor finished off a superb move to cross in the corner.

Deacon this time added the touchline conversion to edge the Bulls in front for the first time.

His kick then set up the position from which Brandon Costin and McAvoy engineered an opening for Withers to score his second try, which made it 26-20.

The drama escalated when Newton rounded off Lam's scintilating run to touch down and Farrell's fifth goal levelled the scores.

Both kickers traded drop goals but it was Deacon's nerve that held at the end.
