Canterbury Bulldogs star Sonny Bill Williams could miss the rest of Australia's National Rugby League season with a knee cartilage injury. The New Zealand international faces up to 12 weeks on the sidelines after an MRI scan revealed the need for surgery
Williams sustained the damage at the weekend on his comeback from a nine-week lay-off with an ankle injury.
"Sonny Bill will consult with a surgeon and will undergo surgery this week," said Bulldogs doctor Hugh Hazard.
"He will be out indefinitely as we await the surgeon's advice."
Williams suffered the injury in the 21-21 draw with South Sydney Rabbitohs on 4 June in his very first involvement in the action.
The regular NRL season concludes on 3 September, with play-off games to follow.
Voted international newcomer of the year for his superb displays in last season's Tri-Nations, Williams has suffered with a string of ankle, shoulder and knee injuries.
