Sonny Bill Williams has ended rumours over his future by signing a new contract with the Canterbury Bulldogs. The 19-year-old New Zealander had been linked with a move to Wigan, St Helens or Leeds in Super League.
Even the All Blacks were reported to have made an approach, but Williams is now committed to the reigning NRL champions until the end of 2007.
"I always insisted I wanted to stay at Canterbury, it was just a matter of time (before signing)," he said.
Williams has been recovering from an ankle injury and a bout of mumps. "I had a shocker (with the injury) but that's over and done with, I am really looking forward to playing," he added.
"The club gave me a go from a young age. That's the whole reason why I'm staying put here for another two years.
"I'm happy and I wanted to repay the club. I'm not interested in playing rugby union at this stage of my career."
Bulldogs chief Malcolm Noad could not hide his delight at finally tying down one of the sport's hottest properties.
"It's taken a long time but anything worthwhile doesn't come easily," he said.
"It's a tremendous thrill for the club that Sonny Bill has agreed to stay."
