Williams shone against Leeds in the World Club Challenge |
Leeds have admitted they would like to bring New Zealand and Canterbury Bulldogs star Sonny Bill Williams to the club. The 19-year-old forward is out of contract at the end of the season, and has been linked with a move to Britain.
"He's a sensational player. We are interested in world-class players," said Leeds chief Gary Hetherington.
"I don't know if he'd be interested in coming to England, but we'd like to think Leeds is an attractive option."
Hetherington denied the Rhinos would be prepared to stump up a reported 300,000-a-year for Williams' salary.
"We're not the ones who have blown his agent away with a substantial offer. I'm not quite sure who it is, if indeed it is any club," said Hetherington.
"I don't believe anybody can make that sort of offer." Earlier this week, Chris Orr, part of Williams' management company, said that a number of Super League clubs had registered their interest in the player although he refused to name individual teams.
Media speculation has suggested Williams, one of the outstanding performers in last year's Tri-Nations, is being lined up as a replacement for Wigan captain Andy Farrell.
Farrell is in talks with the RFU about a possible switch to rugby union, but Wigan have issued a statement denying any immediate interest in Williams. "It is not true to suggest that we are about to sign Sonny Bill Williams," said Wigan chairman Maurice Lindsay.
"We are not trying to anticipate the possible departure of Andy Farrell by prematurely negotiating an expensive contract with Sonny Bill.
"We do not comment on what other clubs might be doing even if they try to suggest what we may or may not be doing."
However, Canterbury are believed to be in the process of putting together an attractive five-year contract for Williams.
