Great Britain's comeback against New Zealand on Saturday earned them their first win of the Tri-Nations Series and left home supporters delighted. But teenage sensation Sonny Bill Williams continued to grab his fair share of the headlines despite his country's defeat in Huddersfield. The 19-year-old loose forward has earned rave reviews after bursting onto the rugby league scene in a big way this year. He enjoyed a starring role again on Saturday, scoring one try and setting up another for Ali Lauitiiti. But he felt he had under-performed after seeing the Kiwis surrender a 12-2 half-time lead. | I'm going to stay strong and get up for the next Test against Great Britain |
"I feel like I let the boys down," said Williams. "I missed Terry Newton when he went over for his try. I took the dummy and he went through to score and get them back in the match, so I don't feel too good." But he added: "I'm going to stay strong and get up for the next Test against Great Britain." Williams lived up to his already burgeoning reputation as one of the sport's most exciting talents with a superb first-half performance. Running through his full repertoire of skills early on, the teenager made a succession of offloads and showcased his uncanny ability to cross the gain-line. And he left Great Britain in no doubts as to his defensive capabilities with a bone-crunching tackle on Paul Sculthorpe that left the Lions' vice-captain in a heap. | For Danny McGuire to play like he has so early in his first-grade career is amazing |
Williams conceded that the Kiwis had produced something special in the first 40 minutes as their expansive offload game paid handsome dividends. "It was a good first half, we played well and it felt good," said the Canterbury Bulldogs ace. "But it was just like the Australia game in the second half - it was just a 70-minute effort." Williams' precocious talent is rivalled by Great Britain's Danny McGuire, the 21-year-old stand-off who was given his first international start at the Galpharm. And the Kiwi is a fan of the Leeds star, insisting: "Danny McGuire is a great player," said Williams. "Great Britain have a lot of fantastic players. I hear that Danny is only 21 so for him to go and score all those tries and play like he has so early in his first-grade career is amazing. "He's done well for himself so good luck to him."
