Australia swept aside Great Britain with a seven-try thrashing to lift the Tri-Nations trophy at Elland Road.

Braces from Anthony Minichiello and Willie Tonga and a try each for Matt Sing and Darren Lockyer gave the Kangeroos a 38-0 half-time lead.

Willie Mason grabbed the seventh try two minutes into the second half, with Craig Fitzgibbon adding the extras.

Winger Stuart Reardon scored Britain's solitary try in the 44th minute after capitalising on a mistake from Sing.

The defeat was Britain's worst on home soil.

GB coach Brian Noble opted for the experience of Iestyn Harris over the relative inexperience of Danny McGuire at stand-off, while there were returns for Paul Sculthorpe and Terry Newton.

But it was the presence of Lockyer, returning after injury, that gave the Australians the attacking guile to carve open the home defence.

The Kangaroos captain proceeded to orchestrate the onslaught with a masterclass of sublime stand-off skills.

He gave his side an early two-point lead after Terry Newton was penalised for holding in the tackle in front of the posts.

Lockyer's task was made simpler when referee Russell Smith moved the kick forwards 10 yards for yet more indiscipline from Newton, this time for unnecessary dissent.

The first try came on eight minutes courtesy of an error from Harris, whose careless offload only found Australian hands.

The subsequent attack saw Minichiello's perfectly weighted kick gathered by Sing, with Lockyer adding the extra two points.

The world champions then crafted a try from the top drawer after three sublime offloads and a defence-splitting pass from Lockyer sent Minichiello under the posts.

Lockyer pulled the strings once again for the Kangaroos' third try, hoisting a tantalising high kick for centre Tonga to outjump GB's smallest player, Brian Carney, for the score.

Minichiello picked up his second try on 24 minutes from yet another slick Australian attack.

The full-back was also helped by some shoddy defending from full-back Paul Wellens.

And four minutes later Lockyer sailed through a non-existent defence for the fifth, adding another two points.

The stunned Elland Road crowd were treated to yet another exhibition of Australian handling skills when Tonga scored the sixth try in the left-hand corner three minutes before the interval.

Replacement Craig Fitzgibbon gave Lockyer's left boot a rest to add the extra two points.

The onslaught continued three minutes into the second-half when Mason cruised over for the seventh try.

The home crowd were finally given something to cheer about minutes later when Reardon capitalised on a mistake from Sing for a try in the corner, but Farrell failed to add the extra two points.

Newton thought he had doubled Britain's score with a touchdown in the corner, but his effort was ruled out by the video referee.
