Schofield's side scored five tries on their first outing of the season
Barrow Raiders coach Garry Schofield has told his players they must 'play smarter' after Sunday's narrow 24-20 win against York City Knights.
Raiders scored five tries in the sapping conditions at Craven Park, but conceded four to the Championship newcomers in reply.
"A win is a win, but the players have been told they have to play smarter," Schofield told BBC Radio Cumbria.
"If we don't then we're going to get found out sometime."
Schofield added: "The way we wanted to play wasn't great in the conditions, but I'm not blaming the conditions.
"When we've got to grind out wins and our backs are against the wall we've got to show that character and spirit.
"The players are buying into it, but they've got to pick up pretty quickly because the second-half wasn't good enough."
Meanwhile the former Great Britain captain continues to work on strengthening the Raiders roster, having already added Mark Gleeson and Jamie Thackray during the winter.
"We are looking at players, but I'm not going to bring in bodies for the sake of it," Schofield said.
"I'm looking at quality and that's what I'm bringing in.
"We are a bit thin on the ground, but we've got enough quality out there,
"I've told them in the dressing room that when teams come here to Craven Park and we're on the road, they are up for it and we have to match that."
