Oldham Roughyeds have re-signed New Zealand half-back Matty Ashe, who left the club last season.

Ashe, 25, attempted to switch to rugby union, playing for Cinderford and Liverpool St Helens, but he has now returned to Whitebank.

"We released Matty so he could pursue an interest in rugby union," said Oldham coach Tony Benson.

"But, having tried his luck on the RU circuit, he prefers the game he has played all his life," he added.

"He was keen to come back to us and we are delighted to welcome him back."

Ashe was a key member the Roughyeds squad last season, playing in 22 of the club's 28 games, scoring eight tries and kicking 78 goals.
