York City Knights enjoyed a comfortable 34-12 home win over London Skolars to confirm their place in the Northern Rail Cup quarter-finals.

Tries from Casey Bromilow (2), Jonathan Schofield, Mark Applegarth, Matthew Duckworth and Lee Waterman, plus five Waterman goals, ensured no upset.

Knights coach Chris Thorman told BBC Radio York: "Performance-wise it was a bit scratchy with all the team changes.

"We're in the next round, which is mission accomplished really."

The Knights would probably have won by a much bigger margin, but Thorman was keen to try out several new players.

"There's nothing quite like playing a game to get used to playing with team-mates," he added.

"You can train all you want, but until you're out there on the field, making decisions under pressure, under fatigue, there's nothing quite like that. You can't simulate that in training.

"There were a few that put their hands up (for a first-team place). We do have a large squad and we have to give opportunities.

"There were a number of players that I was reasonably impressed with that will be pressing for starts on Sunday."

The Knights go to Workington on Sunday, who lost 72-0 to Featherstone in the Challenge Cup.

"I wouldn't read too much into that," Thorman said. "You know you'll get a physical battle up there, and you know you'll get some dodgy weather.

"We're well aware of the threats they will pose, but we need to concentrate on what the Knights will be doing, for instance fixing up a discipline problem we have at the minute.

"We have to do the right things in the few days build-up prior to the game, and if we concentrate on the stuff we can do well, then the result will look after itself.

"We're looking pretty good at the minute, but there's plenty of room for improvement in the side, we can definitely get better."
