Improving York City Knights beat Gateshead in Cup

York City Knights

York City Knights assistant coach Mick Ramsden believes there is still room for improvement, after their 44-12 win at Gateshead in the Challenge Cup.

"We did pretty well today but there were times when we were a bit patchy," Ramsden told BBC Radio York.

Two tries in the first ten minutes put the Knights in command from the start.

Lee Waterman was York's key man as he ran in two tries and kicked five goals with Casey Bromilow also crossing the line twice.

Ramsden said: "We didn't have the enthusiasm last week, but this week we started the game as we wanted, but I'm still looking for that 80 minute performance.

"Sooner or later we're going to come up against a team who will give us a hiding if we don't perform."

Everybody's got to perform to get into the team, and that's a good thing for the squad

Ramsden and temporary coach Chris Thorman chose to start with Bromilow at half-back instead of Jonathan Schofield.

"We were unsure. Jonny played very well against Rochdale but didn't play so well against London Skolars," he said.

"It went pretty well (for Bromilow) today. He can still improve, but that number seven shirt is pretty much up for grabs, really."

Ramsden also praised prop forward Jon Fallon who made his debut.

"He's been training the house down for weeks and weeks, he's got a great attitude."

On Wednesday the Knights will belatedly complete their Northern Rail Cup campaign against London Skolars, and victory will take them into the knock-out stages.

Ramsden is likely to include John Davis and John Turner in the squad for the Cup game, after signing the two teenagers from Castleford.

"We've got a bit of an idea of the team we'll put out."

"There are still some positions not really finalised as to who our best players are in that position.

"Everybody's got to perform to get into the team, and that's a good thing for the squad."

Next Sunday, the Knights travel to Workington, who lost 74-0 to Featherstone Rovers at the weekend.
