Cullen praises final-bound Widnes

Cullen's Vikings beat Whitehaven twice in a matter of weeks

Widnes Vikings coach Paul Cullen was pleased with his side as they ground out a 26-21 victory over Whitehaven in the Championship play-off semi-final.

"I'm delighted with the way this team stuck together, dug in and fought out what is a very important win for this club," he told BBC Radio Merseyside.

"Tonight was the toughest training session we've done in three weeks and we looked a little bit rusty early on.

"We put some ball down and Whitehaven almost made us pay for it."

"We beat them relatively easily three weeks ago," Cullen continued. "They were well turned over at Leigh last week.

"Tonight I thought they were outstanding - the flew off their line and battered us."

Widnes will face either Sheffield or Featherstone in the next round of the play-offs, but the Vikings coach says he does not mind who they will be up against.

"You take what comes at this level now," said Cullen. "We've been to Featherstone and we've won at Sheffield.

"All bets are off now and anything can happen in this competition."
