York to thank schools at Fun Day

York City Knights will hold their sixth annual Schools Family Fun Day at their game against Dewsbury Rams on Sunday.

The day is a celebration of the club's community work and entry for under-16s is free of charge.

The club's general manager Ian Wilson told BBC Radio York: "It's a thank you to everyone that has taken part in various competitions.

"We're hoping it's going to be a good day and a good crowd and hopefully a Knights victory as well."

Wilson said the community work at the club stretches right across York to Selby and Easingwold.

"Adam, our development manager and Tom Haberecht, one of the players, is now working on the development as well so they're visiting schools every day doing coaching sessions, assemblies on healthy lifestyles and team work and things like that," added Wilson.

"It's all going really well, it's all well received by the schools and it's something the club is very proud of and has been for a number of years now.

"It took a few years to get that profile up but it's gone from strength to strength.

"We're really proud with how the community programme has gone over the last four or five years and we've got plans to carry that on and hope to develop it as well.

"Virtually every primary school in York is involved now which is probably about 50 or 60 schools and pretty much every secondary school as well.

"So if you go to school in York you're subject to rugby league now which wasn't the case probably seven or eight years ago. "
