McCormack is making a first return to Widnes since February

Gateshead head coach Steve McCormack has said he is looking forward to returning to former club Widnes in the Championship on Saturday.

McCormack was dismissed by the Lancashire giants earlier in the season and believes his new side Thunder can impress at the Stobart Stadium.

"It's a game that we can compete and do really well," he told BBC Newcastle.

"We've identified strengths and weaknesses we can get at and we've shown we can score points ourselves."

After three and a half years in charge at Widnes, McCormack knows the club well.

And given his success in taking them to two Grand Finals and a Northern Rail Cup, the former Whitehaven and Salford coach believes most fans will appreciate his efforts during his spell.

"I had a decent time at Widnes, I had three and a bit years there, turbulent times and about five chairman," he said.

"There's some good fans there, I'd like to think I'd get a good reception, if I get one fantastic but if I don't then I won't lose any sleep about it.

"The one thing nobody can level at me at Widnes is that I didn't give it 100% it was a big part of my life for three years.

"It would be great to be clapped on, and booed off because of a Gateshead win, that would be the ideal situation."
