Tickle kicked six points for Hull |
Hull ended a run of six successive defeats by fighting back from 10-0 down to beat Salford at The Willows. Darrell Goulding intercepted Richard Horne's pass to score Salford's first try before Richie Myler added a second. Hull responded with scores from Mark Calderwood, Richard Horne and Richard Whiting to lead 16-10 at half-time. A second Goulding try cut the deficit, but Myler missed the extra and John Wilshere failed with a penalty before Danny Tickle kicked another two points. The defeat keeps Salford in the bottom two of Super League, while Hull, the early season table-toppers, climbed to seventh. The visitors began in the worst possible fashion when Horne's long pass found on-loan Goulding, who raced 60m on his home debut. Myler then combined with props Ray Cashmere and Craig Stapleton for his ninth try of the season. | 606: DEBATE |
But a handling mistake from Wilshere saw Hull mount an impressive fightback as Calderwood surged over in the corner following Chris Thorman's long pass after 10 minutes. Richard Horne levelled the scores 17 minutes later, racing on to Lee Radford's pass, with Tickle adding the extras. Thorman had a hand in the third, sending Whiting over eight minutes before the break. Kirk Yeaman had a touchdown ruled out for obstruction in the second half, a decision which sparked the home side to life when Goulding raced over for his second score, reducing the arrears to two points. Myler's conversion attempt hit the post and Wilshere then missed another opportunity to level the scores with a penalty. Tickle's accurate penalty two minutes from time ensured Hull sealed the points for the win.
Salford coach Shaun McRae: "Goal kicking was the difference but as a former kicker I'm not going to blame him for us losing the match. "We weren't smart enough at times in the first half and we lost control of the game. "Darrell Goulding made a big play for his intercept and is fitting in very well." Hull coach Richard Agar: "We needed to dig out a win and I was impressed with our resilience. "It was bang, bang and we were 10-0 down but to win was a pretty good effort. "I thought Kirk Yeaman's try disallowed by the video ref was a try and I was bemused when their scrum-half dived in our back row to get the ball near the end."
