Oliver Wilkes's late try sealed the victory for the Wildcats |
Wakefield continued their good start to the Super League season by beating Hull to move up to third in the table. John Kear's men twice trailed at 6-0 and 14-8 but clinched the win thanks to Danny Brough, who set up two tries and landed a drop-goal. The ex-Hull player had a hand in the tries for Jason Demetriou and Jay Pitts while Scott Grix and Oliver Wilkes also crossed for the Wildcats Mark Calderwood and Mike Burnett scored tries for the Black and Whites. Calderwood gave Hull the lead after 10 minutes with his third try of the season, converted by Danny Tickle, and although Demetriou and Grix responded, Brough missed both kicks. But Hull were not to be denied a half-time advantage, with Mike Burnett marking his return from eight weeks out with an ankle injury with a simple score under the posts after a Danny Washbrook pass with Tickle's goal opening up a 12-8 interval lead. | 606: DEBATE |
Wakefield were comfortably the better side on the restart but it was Hull who extended their lead on 53 minutes with a Tickle penalty. But Wakefield levelled just before the hour mark through Pitts with Brough adding the extras from in front of the post. The Scotland captain then kicked over a drop-goal with 13 minutes left before Wilkes sealed Wakefield's success with a walk-over try under the posts after neat work from Brad Drew.
Wakefield coach John Kear: "We are just doing the old boring soccer cliché, looking after each game as it comes along. They're working very hard indeed on the training pitch. "To win three games in eight days is pretty difficult and that's what they have done so they need all the plaudits and pats on the back. "They've three days off now, and then it's a matter of they come in on Tuesday and it is sleeves rolled up and they're back down to work." Hull coach Richard Agar: "I thought we started pretty brightly and the message at half time was cut the errors out. "Unfortunately the errors at the moment are having a deflating effect on the team. You could see the body language in some of the boys drop. It's hurting us badly. "We had an inability to defuse kicks and get out of our own end. I'm saying the same things week in week out."
