Wigan (4) 8 Tries: Bailey, Roberts Huddersfield (10) 22 Tries: Moore, Lawrence, Brown Goals: Hodgson 5
Late tries by Michael Lawrence and Kevin Brown helped Huddersfield overcome Wigan in a scrappy, ill-tempered encounter. The Giants led 10-4 at the break thanks to Scott Moore's touchdown and three goals from full-back Brett Hodgson. Warriors' Amos Roberts added to Phil Bailey's first-half score to pull the game back. But Lawrence and Brown both capitalised as Shaun Ainscough failed to gather kicks, to secure the points.
Wigan coach Brian Noble "Every team that has played Huddersfield has struggled to go forward. "I thought we managed it reasonably well but you're never going to get a quick game against Huddersfield - and it's something that needs to be looked at. "We were physically dominant for long periods of the game, and I can't remember them really making a break in the game. "I don't think we had much help this evening in relation to how we wanted to play the game, and I think a couple of crucial decisions went against us. "Whilst we take responsibility for what we do, and I thought we didn't kick as well as we could have, we didn't just get our just rewards. "Our execution at times wasn't as good as it should have been and our patience wasn't either, but we were a whole lot closer than the scoreline suggests." Giants coach Nathan Brown "We're not the smartest team in the competition but I don't think there is another team that tries harder than us. "Hopefully they're enjoying winning and hopefully they're getting used to winning because it becomes a habit. "The good thing is we are winning our close games. The scoreline might have read 22-8 but it was a close game. "We are winning all our tight games, and that is the difference between having the potential to have a good year and having a bad year."
