Michael Dobson laid on two tries and kicked five conversions and a late drop goal as Hull KR held off Wakefield.

They scored three tries in the first half and two in the second, but the Wildcats rallied with two late scores.

Shaun Briscoe opened Rovers' account, with Clint Newton, Scott Murell, Ben Fisher and Liam Colbon also scoring.

Kevin Henderson replied before the break, and second-period tries from Dale Ferguson and Sean Gleeson had the hosts on the back foot late on.

Wakefield were dealt an early blow when playmaker Brad Drew left the field after a big hit from Murrell.

Rovers took the lead when Dobson's pass sent in Briscoe, and prop Newton then burst onto a pass from Murrell to touch down.

Murrell capitalised on indecision in the Wildcats defence for an easy try as Rovers took an 18-0 lead.

But the Wildcats responded when a long pass out wide saw Henderson go over in the corner. Tony Martin added the conversion.

Rovers extended their lead after 52 minutes when hooker Fisher forced his way over from dummy half, and Dobson added his fourth successful conversion.

His long pass then set up a score in the corner for Colbon and the playmaker added the extras from the touchline.

Wakefield added their second touchdown when Ferguson found a hole to go through and score.

Gleeson added a further score and Martin kicked his third conversion, but Dobson added a late one-pointer.

Hull KR coach Justin Morgan:
"Apart from the last 10 minutes of the first half when they got a try I thought we were very good and very solid. Our concentration levels were good although we did have a lapse.

"We have not been at our best all year and today was no exception but we got the two points.

"Wakefield are battered and bruised at the moment but they showed great spirit, typified by the way Dave Halley soldiered on for the whole of the second half with a leg injury.

"The others kept going and that is a testimony to the spirit which John Kear has created."

Wakefield coach John Kear:
"We tried to get Ryan Atkins to play but he could not get through the warm-up. Brad Drew then came off early and that left a big hole and made things pretty tough.

"Every week you look for some sort of improvement and last year if we had been 30-6 points down I think we would have folded like a pack of cards.

"This time they rolled up their sleeves and had a dig. We have taken a step forward not in technical terms or ability but in character."
