Wakefield v Warrington

Wakefield ran in eight tries for a comprehensive victory to add to Warrington's misery and pile the pressure on coach James Lowes.

The Wildcats never looked back after building up a 24-0 first-half lead.

Matt Blaymire scored two of the early tries and finished with a hat-trick while there were two tries apiece for Dale Ferguson and Dave Halley.

Luke George marked his return after a year out injured with a try while Tony Martin added 16 points with the boot.

Despite losing James Stosic and Sam Obst through injury in the first half, Wakefield were dominant as they claimed a third win in four games and handed the Wolves their eighth consecutive loss, stretching back to last season's play-offs.

Blaymire went over twice in the opening 12 minutes with Martin setting up both and it was soon 18-0 when Ferguson made light work of Lee Briers' attempted tackle to make the best of Brad Drew's pass.

The one-way traffic continued, with on-loan winger Dave Halley soon adding a fourth score after another error from Chris Riley.

Two quick tries from Louis Anderson gave Warrington hope but Halley went the length of the field to extend Wakefield's lead just before the break.

Warrington started the second half well and Chris Bridge was twice denied by some strong goal-line defence.

Ferguson took another Drew pass to go over from close range before Hicks scored his side's third try.

Blaymire completed his hat-trick with 12 minutes to go before Bridge got his name on the scoresheet for the Wolves.

But the Wildcats had the final say as George claimed a well-worked score.

Wakefield coach John Kear:

"Because we performed well in our first two games, our confidence and our belief has grown and we're playing some good rugby league at the minute.

"I have always been a believer that a champion team will always beat a team of champions, because a champion team is together, a champion team is united and a champion team is working towards a common goal.

"They're demonstrating that in bucketfuls and, so long as they maintain that unity, we're going to be a decent proposition against any opposition."

Warrington coach James Lowes:

"I thought we made big strides. At the top end of the field we contained them quite well, it was good defensively.

"What let us down a little bit were one or two poor penalties and, even then, in the first half we defended five sets on the line.

"But I'm real positive about what we can do and I still believe in what we can do. We're creating stuff so there's plenty to take out of it. The guys were enthusiastic right to the end and they played their hearts out this week."
