Whitehaven look likely to miss out on the signing of Australian half-back Dan Russell after his work permit application was refused on Thursday. Russell, 25, had his initial application turned down in December which led to the appeal and the club are disappointed by the new ruling. "[We] feel sorry for a very talented player," a club statement read. "Danny's experience, training and contribution would put him on a par with others who have gained approval." In the case of another Haven star Saia Makisi, a third request has been made for additional material which the club have confirmed they are providing. A number of high-profile rugby league stars have been forced to cancel moves to the UK following work permit problems. The most high profile recent rejection was for Hull FC's back row signing Michael Crocker, a member of the Australian test squad, soon after Todd Carney's proposed move to Huddersfield was also scuppered by visa issues.
