Knights doubt over March fitness

David March
David March has not played since the start of May

York City Knights loose forward David March is rated 50-50 for this weekend's trip to Rochdale Hornets.

March has been missing with a calf injury since the start of May but coach Paul March said his brother was back in training with the Knights.

He told BBC Radio York: David's trained this week but if he has an ill effect we'll leave him out.

"If not he'll train with the squad [before the game] and we'll take it from there."

If David is fit he will go straight back in to the side at the expense of someone else.

Paul said: "He's experienced and he's a match-winner so he's going to come straight back in. "It's how [the rest of the team] perform in training now. Obviously they've all upped their game since [prop] Adam Sullivan came in so it's time for them to up it again."

He is not planning on making too many changes for the Rochdale game despite the disappointing draw against London Skolars last week.

We need to concentrate on ourselves and make sure we're doing all the things right - the things we didn't do against London

York City Knights coach Paul March
"I'm going to keep faith with most of the 17. Lee Mapals will come back in to contention after being dropped but Ryan Esders probably won't play this week due to off the field stuff.

"They've done it three weeks prior to last weekend and they've got their chance to prove me wrong.

"I think myself and the lads got a bit carried away [against London]. We were playing well and we went in to that game and some of our attitudes towards it were that we were going to walk it. Unfortunately, we didn't, did we?

"Looking at Rochdale this week we've got points to prove and they have as well after their defeat on Tuesday so I'm expecting a tough game."

The Knights will face a Rochdale side without a coach after Bobbie Goulding was sacked on Thursday.

Paul added: "They're going to be desperate. I've played in teams where they've lost coaches and they've brought someone else in and they just want to prove a point to the new coach.

"Its going to be a desperate time for them. But we need to concentrate on ourselves and make sure we're doing all the things right - the things we didn't do against London. Hopefully we'll come out with a better result."
