Wakefield put in a gritty display to claim a crucial win over Huddersfield.

Aaron Murphy gave the Wildcats an early lead but tries by Luke Robinson and Rod Jensen put the Giants in control before Tony Martin's try cut the gap.

A try from Oliver Wilkes, converted by Martin, edged the Wildcats in front only for Chris Thorman to restore the lead with two penalties.

But penalties by Martin and Danny Brough gave the Wildcats their first away win of Super League XIII.

"Adam is on compassionate leave and this win is dedicated to him and his family.

"It is something the players spoke about before the game. Things like this draw you close and that is what it has done. The players have done Adam proud and they've done themselves proud.

"This was as much about character and togetherness as a group. I felt tactically and technically we could have played better but it was a very creditable win.

"It means a lot to us. The four losses we suffered against Huddersfield last year cost us a place in the top six so we're absolutely delighted."

"I thought the best team lost today. In four of the last five games we've been in front going into the last quarter. We're just not closing games off and that is anxiety.

"We need to improve our kicking game. Both Danny Brough and Jamie Rooney's kicking game was really important to Wakefield but, apart from that, I thought we dominated the game.

"The positive thing is we're playing good stuff and creating opportunities. The guys probably just need a win."
