Kemble won only one match in his five-game tenure |
Gary Kemble has quit as New Zealand rugby league coach after less than six months in the job. It follows a revolt led by captain Roy Asotasi, when senior team members said they had no confidence in him.
He took over in August 2007 when Brian McClennan moved to Leeds but only managed one win in his five matches, over France.
New Zealand lost a series 3-0 to Great Britain and were beaten by a record 58-0 by Australia.
Asotasi had given his backing to former Australia coach Wayne Bennett, who is expected to be appointed soon in a coaching position for the World Cup.

The board of New Zealand Rugby League held a meeting on Friday, where they refused to sack him or call for his resignation, but hours later he announced he was quitting.
"As a former Kiwi player, I'd have to say it was very disappointing to see the way they handled the issue," Kemble said. "They could have gone through other channels.
"I was keen to continue as Kiwis' coach through to the World Cup later this year."

New Zealand Rugby League chairman Ray Haffenden said he regretted Kemble's decision and the manner in which it was forced.
"This hasn't been a good week for the game in this country," he said.
"As a board we weren't at all impressed with the conduct of the players in this matter. It wasn't appropriate or acceptable."
