Kemble won 19 caps for New Zealand |
Former Hull full-back Gary Kemble has been appointed head coach of New Zealand in a deal that will take him up to the World Cup next year. Kenble, 50, replaces Brian McClennan, who quit last month to take over at Super League side Leeds in December.
Kemble's first match will be October's Test against Australia in Wellington.
"It's a tremendous honour. When I started playing I dreamed of playing for the Kiwis, and once I started coaching it was the same," Kemble said.
"I just hope we can all build on what's been done in the last couple of years."
Kemble, a real estate agent in Auckland, got the New Zealand job ahead of 14 other applicants, including New Zealand A coach Phil Prescott.
Prescott, former Hull star James Leuluai, and ex-Wigan player Sam Panapa have been appointed as Kemble's assistants.
Kemble won 19 Kiwi caps between 1980 and 1986 and played for Hull in the 1985 Challenge Cup final at Wembley before switching to coaching.
