Hull held off a late Huddersfield fightback to win their Super League elimination play-off and stay on course for a return to Old Trafford.

Two Gareth Raynor tries - one in each half - had helped give last year's Grand Finalists a 22-6 lead with 11 minutes remaining.

The Giants fought back with tries from Paul Reilly and Kevin Brown and a Chris Thorman kick.

But Hull kept their composure to set up a meeting with Wigan next weekend.

Two tries in the space of four first-half minutes had given the Black and Whites the perfect start.

After eight minutes Raynor was fastest to Mathew Head's kick through, although Danny Tickle missed the extras, and then Thomas Lee went over after capitalising on an error from Paul Reilly who was tackled heavily by Garreth Carvell.

Huddersfield, in the play-offs for the first time, looked nervy throughout the first half and committed a series of errors.

They started the second half brighter and a move that went the length of the field fashioned by Jamahl Lolesi led to hooker Ryan Hudson's try with Thorman cutting the gap further with the extras.

But the visitors were penalised for offside and Tickle penalty's extended the lead once more.

But the key moment came just on the hour mark when Richard Horne intercepted a loose Kevin Brown pass and ran almost 60 metres for the try but Tickle missed the conversion.

Raynor's second try looked to have made the game safe but Huddersfield were not going to give up without a fight.

Reilly, Brown and Thorman did their best to ensure a grandstand finish but the visitors ran out of time as they chased an equaliser.

  • Huddersfield coach Jon Sharp

"If we had another couple of sets, we could have got them. We ran out of time.

"All week we we had been talking about staying calm but I just felt early on we looked a little bit wet behind the ears.

"We had a slow start but we finished really strong. We came up against a really good side but we acquitted ourselves extremely well and we'll be better for the experience."

  • Hull coach Peter Sharp

"Rugby league is quite mad. We saw some people do some things they don't normally do last night and it was the same tonight.

"It makes for exciting rugby but it's no good for coaches.

"Defensively we've been very good for the last three weeks and it stood us in good stead. Apart from the last 10 minutes, we were very sound defensively but we will have to do a fair bit better against Wigan."
