Hull KR's special one
By Phil Harlow

I make no secret of the fact that I want to coach in Super League

Justin Morgan may be lacking the designer coat, but the fast-rising Hull Kingston Rovers coach is keen to take on the mantle of Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho.

The 30-year-old Australian has made the perfect start to life as Hull KR coach, taking his side into the last eight of the Challenge Cup and to the top of National League One with a 100% record.

So it comes as little surprise that one of Morgan's coaching role models is Mourinho, the man who has led the Blues to two consecutive Premiership titles.

"Since moving to England I've taken a great interest in football," Morgan told BBC Sport.

"Jose Mourinho is someone I really admire. All coaches aspire to be like him and to have the respect he inspires from his players and his peers.

"I also like Big Sam Allardyce at Bolton and the way he manages his teams."

Morgan sprung to prominence as a coach last season as he took Toulouse to the Challenge Cup semi-finals, beating Super League side Widnes along the way.

The former Paramatta and New Zealand Warriors prop called time on his playing career at the tender age of 26 to embark on life as a coach.

"I started my NRL career relatively early at 18, and I got to the age of 26 and most probably achieved all I was ever going to as a player," he said.

"I wanted to get out while I was still playing first-grade rugby. I did that and decided to move into coaching.

"I had some fantastic coaches as a player and learnt a great deal from them."

"(Leeds coach) Tony Smith and (St Helens coach) Daniel Anderson are two guys I look up to and still talk to for guidance. The time in France was also a great grounding for me."

Like Mourinho, Morgan makes no secret of his ambition, nor of his obsessive attention to detail in preparation for matches.

"I want to coach in Super League, it's a great competition." he said.

"I'm continuing to learn this trade - the day you stop learning is the day you should change jobs. I'm at a very ambitious club as well, which is one of the reasons I took the job.

"I enjoy the attention to detail and giving the players as much information as possible. Ultimately the players are the ones who go out and do the job, so the more information you can give them - without bogging them down - the better.

"It's important to make sure the training content is varied but retains a good grasp on our principals that we're trying to get over.

"I spend a lot of time going through tapes of our games and cutting it up for video session with the players, highlighting areas where we can improve.

"We make sure the players have enough information to handle the next three or four games."

Hull KR's run to the last eight of the Challenge Cup has earned them a home tie against Super League side Warrington, and Morgan says his side will not be content with a "brave" performance.

"I'm very excited about challenging ourselves against one of the best teams in the country," he said.

"I love the way Warrington play. They've got some top-quality international players and it will be a really good indicator for us to see where we are. We haven't hidden from the fact that we want to get Hull KR back to the top-flight.

"In rugby league, as in most sports, if you have the belief then you're halfway there. A big part of the coaching job is to make sure that the players buy into that theory and it'll be no different against Warrington.

"We'll be going there to get the result, not make up the numbers. The reward at the end of the 80 minutes is a place in the semi-finals and then you're only one win away from Twickenham."
