Hull were able to increase their lead on 26 minutes through Cooke's penalty and another precise pass played in Yeaman for a simple try before the break.
The home side had more purpose in the second half and with nine minutes gone, they finally turned pressure into points.
Auckland-born Cliff Beverley threw a superb dummy to create some space and Anthony Stewart was on hand to cross.
Hull however, soon hit back, and on 55 minutes Cooke danced through the Salford defence and powered his way over before kicking the conversion himself to give his side a 16-4 lead.
Salford needed to try something different to get into the game and with 10 minutes to go, Luke Robinson fired a superbly-weighted grubber kick to the corner and Hodgson ran in for the try.
Suddenly the Reds could sense a sensational comeback and after Andy Coley's break, Haggerty was able to touch down.
But Chris Charles was having a dreadful day with the boot and he missed his third conversion which would have put further pressure on the visitors.
And with time running out, Raynor sneaked his way over to complete a hard-fought win.
