Vainikolo to miss British matches | Vainikolo has delayed his surgery to play against Australia | New Zealand winger Lesley Vainikolo will miss the Tri-Nations matches against Great Britain as he is to undergo knee surgery. The Bradford player has needed the operation for some time but asked his club if he could delay it until after Saturday's match against Australia. "He was booked into a clinic this week," said Bradford's Stuart Duffy. "But he asked if he could play this week and we agreed to let him play the one game." Vainikolo will miss the matches against Great Britain on 30 October and 20 November, as well as the final on 27 November should the Kiwis qualify. He will replace Matt Utai against Australia on Saturday, after Utai was forced to stay at home for ankle surgery following last week's 16-16 draw with the Kangaroos. "I'm very happy that Lesley is available to play Australia," said New Zealand Rugby League chairman Selwyn Pearson. "It's just unfortunate he won't be able to continue but I'm of the understanding that he desperately needs surgery."
New Zealand team to face Australia: Brent Webb, Francis Meli, Nigel Vagana, Paul Whatuira, Lesley Vainikolo, Vinnie Anderson, Thomas Leuluai, Jason Cayless, Louis Anderson, Nathan Cayless, Ruben Wiki, Logan Swann, Sonny-Bill Williams. Replacements: Robbie Paul, Roy Asotasi, David Kidwell, Paul Rauhihi.
