Smith named top coach
Huddersfield coach Tony Smith
Smith has taken Huddersfield to the brink of promotion
Huddersfield boss Tony Smith has been named Northern Ford Premiership (NFP) coach of the year.

Smith has taken the Giants to the brink of promotion in their first season out of Super League with an unbeaten run of 28 games.

The Huddersfield coach received his award on Tuesday at a presentation dinner at Elland Road, Leeds, where three of his players were also named in the NFP all-star team.

And the Giants picked up another prize as they became the first winners of the NFP merit award to mark their unbeaten season to date.

If they beat Leigh Centurions in Saturday's Grand Final at Widnes, Huddersfield will equal Wigan's record run of 29 successive victories.

Batley's Australian scrum-half Glen Tomlinson took the player of the year award after breaking the club's try-scoring record in his farewell season.

And Doncaster's Johnny Woodcock was named as the league's young player of the year.
