Giants edge closer to promotion
Stanley Gene was among the Huddersfield tryscorers

Huddersfield moved within one game of a return to Super League with a crushing win over Leigh in their Northern Ford Premiership Grand Final play-off.

The Giants, who were relegated from the top flight last season, proved far too quick and strong for the Centurions as they won 36-10 at the McAlpine Stadium.

Leigh have another bite of the cherry but must beat either Batley or Oldham to set up a rematch with Huddersfield a Halton Stadium on 12 October.

Oldham recorded a stunning 20-6 win at Rochdale while Batley edged to a 32-30 win at Featherstone.

Batley's Dean Lawford
Lawford's conversion proved crucial for Batley
Skipper Steve McNamara proved Huddersfield's main inspiration, kicking five goals and scoring a brilliant solo try before the break.

Chris Thorman also ran in for two tries while Stanley Gene and Marcus St Hilaire also crossed the whitewash.

The Centurions rallied in the second half but missed the influence of scrum-half Bobbie Goulding, who went off injured before the break.

Willie Swann and Jon Roper pulled back tries for the visitors but Andy Rice went over in the corner to wrap up the game for Tony Smith's side.

Dean Lawford's conversion proved crucial for Batley in their nail-biting victory at Featherstone.

Chris North levelled the scores with his second try 12 minutes from time before Lawford's kick, his fourth goal of the afternoon, gave the Bulldogs a two-point advantage.

Oldham's Graham Barber
Barber touched down twice for Oldham
Featherstone had recovered from 14-0 and 26-14 behind to snatch the lead with a 66th-minute try from winger Matt Bramald but Batley got the edge through North.

The only consolation for Rovers, who trailed 14-0 and 26-14, was that Jamie Rooney's three goals established a new individual club record of 165 for a season, eclipsing Steve Quinn's 1983 mark.

Oldham, who were beaten by Widnes in last year's Grand Final, made it fourth time lucky against Rochdale this season.

Gareth Barber and Mark Sibson both went over as the Roughyeds built up a 14-0 first-half lead before Barber bagged his second try after the break.

Matt Long reduced the arrears late on but it was too late for the Hornets.
