Norway's Aksel Lund Svindal has won the men's super-combined gold at the World Championships in Val d'Isere. Svindal posted the fastest time in the downhill section and clocked a combined winning time of two minutes 23 seconds. France's Julien Lizeroux, in 22nd position after the downhill, thrilled the home fans by clocking the best slalom time to win the silver medal. "It was tough because Lizeroux put lots of pressure on me with a sensational slalom run," said 26-year-old Svindal. Croatia's Natko Zrncic-Dim took the bronze, 1.58 seconds behind the winner, after a tricky slalom staged under floodlights with snow falling hard on this French Alps resort. Meanwhile, American Lindsey Vonn won her second gold medal of the championships with victory in the women's downhill, to add to the Super-G title she won on Tuesday. | 606: DEBATE |
The overall leader of the World Cup standings clocked 1:30.31 down the 2,227m course to join Andrea Mead Lawrence as the only American women to win two gold medals at a World Championship. Vonn, 24, beat Swiss teenager Lara Gut who was 0.52sec off the pace, while Italian Nadia Fancini took bronze. "It was very difficult out there, I was pretty nervous. But I believed in myself and fought all the way down. It's been an amazing day," Vonn said. Gut, 17, added the silver medal in the downhill to the second place she had already claimed in the super combined and revealed she had overcome a stomach ache to take part in the race. "I feel very proud to have put in this performance and achieved a silver medal, It's amazing to get two medals. Last night and before and after the race today I had stomach ache," she said.
