Bynum is mobbed after his match-winning score |
A last-gasp score by Will Bynum sent Georgia Tech into the NCAA men's basketball final after a 67-65 win over Oklahoma State.
The third seeds will now face Connecticut who upset the odds with a 79-78 win over Duke.
Bynum hit a lay-up for the Yellow Jackets with just 1.5 seconds to play after a John Lucas three-pointer had tied the game at 65-all with 26.3 seconds left.
After a time out, Tech worked the ball around to Bynum, who drove down the right side of the lane and sent home the winner.
Some good three-point shooting by Marvin Lewis gave the Jackets an early advantage and Australian centre Luke Schenscher, who finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds ensured his side stayed ahead.
"I didn't feel any pressure," Bynum admitted after the game. "The only pressure I felt was going into the locker room if I would have missed that shot."
Emeka Okafor shows his delight at Connecticut's win |
Connecticut, led by All-American Emeka Okafor, scored 12 straight points down the stretch after Duke had taken a 75-67 lead.
Okafor, who spent almost all of the first half on the bench in foul trouble, scored five points, grabbed three rebounds and shut down Duke's offense over the last four minutes.
Okafor's earlier absence had allowed Duke take control of the game and they were 41-35 ahead at the break and at one stage had a lead in double figures.
But late foul trouble cost them dearly with all three of their centres - Shelden Williams, Shavlik Randolph and Nick Horvath - fouled out before the end.
Okafor gave UConn a 76-75 lead with 26 seconds left and after Duke came downcourt, he was on hand to block a J.J. Redick effort.
Rashad Anderson hit two free throws to push UConn's lead to three, and after Redick missed a three-point attempt, Okafor got the rebound and made a free throw to secure the game.
A late Chris Duhon three-pointer was small consolation for Duke.
