Syracuse celebrate victory in 2003 |
The University of Kentucky are the overall top seeds for this year's NCAA men's college basketball tournament. The NCAA selection committee also gave number one seeds to Duke, Stanford and Saint Joseph's in the four regional brackets.
Despite Kentucky's ranking, Duke are widely seen as the favourites for this year's title.
"March Madness" gets underway with a play-in game on 16 March in Dayton, Ohio, between Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champions Florida A&M (14-16) and Patriot League champion Lehigh (20-10).
The winner joins the final field of 64 teams.
The four regional finals will be played in St Louis, Atlanta, Phoenix and East Rutherford, New Jersey.
Syracuse, the defending national champions, are seeded fifth in Phoenix.
The Arizona Wildcats continue their appearance streak, having sent a team to every NCAA tournament since 1985 - the longest current run in the US.
Traditional powers such as Georgetown, UCLA and St John's also did not qualify for the 65-strong field this year.
The regionals run from 25-28 March, and the Final Four is in San Antonio from 3-5 April.
