British basketball star John Amaechi is expected to be released by the New York Knicks just days after joining them from Houston. New Knicks president Isiah Thomas says the club will probably waive the Manchester-born player.
Amaechi, 33, was signed by the Knicks as part of a deal which sent Clarence Weatherspoon to Houston.
Amaechi joined Houston in the summer from Utah but had not played for them this season because of injury.
If he is released, it will not affect Amaechi's reputation as the most celebrated player ever to emerge from Britain.
His most successful NBA season was 1999-2000 with the Orlando Magic, when he played more than 21 minutes a game and averaged almost 11 points.
