| Monday, 20 January, 2003, 00:24 GMT Buccaneers reach Super Bowl ![]() Johnson and the Bucs will head to San Diego The Tampa Bay Buccaneers reached their first Super Bowl with a 27-10 win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. They will now meet Oakland in the season-ending showdown in San Diego, after the Raiders eased past the Tennessee Titans. Starting as big underdogs, Tampa Bay were rocked by an Eagles touchdown in the first minute of this NFC Championship game.
But they fought back well, driven by the accurate arm of quarterback Brad Johnson. After the teams had traded touchdowns in the first quarter, Johnson threw a nine-yard scoring pass to Keyshawn Johnson to give the Bucs an edge in the second period. Urged on by their passionate fans in the last-ever NFL game to be played at Veterans Stadium, Philadelphia searched for a reply. But home quarterback Donovan McNabb could find no way through Tampa Bay's stern defence. And Ronde Barber's 92-yard interception return with three minutes and 18 seconds remaining clinched the NFC title and a trip to San Diego for the jubilant visitors. Johnson finished 20-of-33 for 259 yards, while opposite number McNabb struggled to 26-of-49 passing for a total of 247 yards. Tampa Bay head coach Jon Gruden can now look forward to an intriguing match-up against his old team. |
