Brodie swam a personal best to gain the Commonwealth qualifying time |
Devon-based swimmer Cameron Brodie has secured a spot on the Scottish team in the 200m butterfly for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi. The 17-year-old, who is a pupil at Kelly College in Tavistock, gained the qualifying time for the Commonwealths at the European Junior Championships. Brodie put in a lifetime best performance at the Helsinki meet, coming fifth in the final in 2:00:17. The youngster's time was 0.1 seconds inside the qualifying standard. Brodie's coach Robin Brew feels the swimmer's rise to international level has been on the cards for several years. | Cameron loves to race, he's a great competitor, and he's exciting to watch |
Brew told BBC Sport: "He's been steadily progressing for the past three or four years now, but this represents a real breakthrough for us. "We've been working on this transition from juniors to seniors and now we've achieved that step." "Cameron will now be able to use this event as a springboard, and the prospect of him improving over the next two years is quite exciting. With the Commonwealth Games regarded as one of the most prestigious events on the swimming calendar, Brew believes his young charge will be firmly in contention for a place at the London Olympics. He said: "Without a shadow of a doubt we'll have our sights set on 2012, as will a lot of people - but the fact that he got the qualifying time for Delhi shows the motivation he has. "Cameron loves to race, he's a great competitor, and he's exciting to watch."
