Paralympians set British records

Paralympic swimming champions Ellie Simmonds and Sam Hynd were both in record-breaking form at the Nationwide DSE Junior Swimming Championships.

Simmonds, 14, who won two golds in Beijing and was recently awarded the MBE, broke British short-course records in the S6 100 and 400m in Sheffield.

Hynd broke five records in his S8 category in the 50, 100, 200 and 400m freestyle and the 50m breaststroke.

His efforts saw him awarded the meeting's Outstanding Male trophy.

In total, 19 British records were broken at the event, with Louise Watkin improving four marks.

The Kelly College student, who won a silver and three bronzes in Beijing, broke the S9 50, 100 and 400m freestyle records as well as the 100m backstroke mark.

Another Paralympian, backstroke specialist Jonathan Fox, got among the records in the S7 500 and 100m.

Lucy Walkup and Alfie Goldsmith took the Nationwide Junior awards for the younger age group with Emma Hollis, who broke the SB7 50m breaststroke British record, taking the Outstanding Female honour.

Other British records went to Andrew Mullen (S5 25m backstroke), Sam Kaye (50m butterfly), Thomas Young (S8 50m backstroke), East (female 34pt 400m relay), South East (female 60pt 400m relay).
